Instructions:
For USMT v10 (ADK 10): download the packages you need (x86, amd64, arm64) and put them to the same directory as “Extractor Script”, then run it (no administrative privileges required). You don’t need to download all packages, just download the ones you need. Please note that every “Extractor Script” belongs to corresponding ADK/Windows version. You don’t have to use them interchangeably.
For USMT v5.0/v6.1 (ADK 8/8.1 Update): You have to download all packages (installer, updater, x86, amd64), otherwise installer will show an error message for a missing “CAB” file. All files have to reside in the same directory. First install “MSI” file and then “MSP” to update.
Disclaimer (Read Carefully!!!):
- All download links without a warning message (except for “Extractor Script”) are official links hosted by Microsoft.
- All download links marked as “Unofficial Link!!!” or “Web Archive Link” are NOT hosted by Microsoft anymore. Please use them at your own risk! If you intend to use such files, please always check for the file’s Digital Signature, whether its Digital Signature is still valid (the file hasn’t been tampered with) and make sure they are signed by “Microsoft Corporation” and not someone else! For example USMT v4.0.1 is signed by “Simon Jarvis”, which means regardless of the download source, it is definitely redistributed by someone else. Or “Win2kMigUser” is a “ZIP” archive without a Digital Signature and contains migration scripts. Again, DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
- Starting Windows 10, Microsoft decided to also install “Windows Setup” files (used for creating windows installation media) with USMT. I have no idea why! but it means you have to download an additional ~100MB (setup files for x86, amd64 and arm64) to be able to install USMT. So I wrote a script to extract it, but in the same directory as “CAB” files reside, instead of “Program Files” folder (so no administrative privileges are required).
- Warning: Every “Extractor Script” belongs to corresponding ADK/Windows version. If you use them interchangeably you may end up with a wrong directory structure or file name, leading to partial or permanent loss of functionality (or even loss of data during migration!).
- Regardless of the source and destination OSes mentioned, the destination OS must always be newer than, or equal to the source OS. Migration to a previous version of windows is not supported. Please note that USMT may not support Windows Server.
